Ronald Cavallaro, 77Landscaper, baseball memorabilia collector

LYNN - Mr. Ronald L. Cavallaro, 77 years of Lynn, formerly of Swampscott, died on Monday October 11, 2010 in Salem Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Swampscott, the son of the late Sebastian and Carmella (Musto) Cavallaro. He was raised in Swampscott and was a graduate of Swampscott High School. He lived in Swampscott most of his life and the past seven years in Lynn.

Mr. Cavallaro was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Swampscott and a member of the Swampscott Club. He was an avid collector, especially baseball memorabilia. He was a self employed landscaper.

Mr. Cavallaro is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia J. Cavallaro (worked in CSD & Tel Sales) of Swampscott, Paula M. Potvin and her husband Benjamin of Salem and a son, Richard J. Cavallaro of Salem. He leaves his brother, Robert P. Cavallaro and his wife Andrea of Swampscott. Mr. Cavallaro also leaves his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Kohler of Swampscott and Gracelyn Potvin of Salem, three nieces, Carla Cavallaro, Gina Cavallaro Gould and Leila Cavallaro McKeon. He was the father of the late Darren R. and Derrick R. Cavallaro. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Brackett) Cavallaro and former husband of Carol (Field) Alvino of Danvers.

(Mitchell) Hammond, 88, beloved wife of Henry Eliot Hammond, passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on Thursday, June 24th, 2010. She and Eliot were fortunate enough to have celebrated 66 wonderful years of marriage together, and were completely dedicated to one another and their family. Virginia was the mother of Cheryl H. Thomas of Peabody, Dexter E. Hammond of Beverly, and Kimberly G. Donahue of Danvers.

Born in Beverly, she was the daughter of the late Edward F. and Rachel H. (Woodman) Mitchell. She attended and graduated from Beverly High School in 1938. She lived most of her life in Beverly, spending 64 years at her home on Brimbal Ave. She and Eliot spent their time traveling between their homes in Beverly, Gilford, NH, and Clermont, Fla.

She was a member of the Church in the Cove in Beverly. She was also a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, and former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She and Eliot spent a great deal of time and enjoyed traveling. Together they visited Spain, Morocco, Alaska, England, Scotland, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Canada, Bermuda, and the Bahamas, in addition to visiting many of the states here in the United States. She loved to knit, spend time with her children, and grandchildren, and never missed watching any of her favorite soap operas.

She was the sister of the late Rodney F. Mitchell and Wayne I. Mitchell, both of Beverly.

Funeral services will be held privately for the immediate family, and burial will be observed privately by the family at the North Beverly Cemetery. LYNN - Mrs. Mafalda J. “Minnie” (Vassallo) Guiffre, age 86, of Lynn, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, September 22nd. She was the wife of the late Anthony J. “Andy” Guiffre.

Minnie enjoyed cooking, playing cards, knitting, but most especially loved her family and grandchildren. Kenneth E. Swinson, 79

BEVERLY — Kenneth E. Swinson, 79, husband of Stacia (Kologziej) Swinson (former TelSales Rep), with whom he shared 27 years of marriage, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010 at Beverly Hospital.

Son of the late Ludwig and Leah (McCarthy) Swinson, Kenneth was born and raised in Gloucester and was a graduate of Gloucester High School. He also served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kathy Williams and her husband David of Gloucester and Karen MacIntosh and her husband Edward of Gloucester; one brother, Harold Swinson and his wife Virginia of Gloucester; three sisters, Edith Hildonen of Gloucester, Phyllis LeVie of Gloucester, and Mary Lane and her husband Raymond of Hudson, Fla.; one grandchild, Nathan Williams; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Howard Swinson and sister, Gloria Madruga.

Virginia Barton, 82

Fought racism with soft voice and gentle smile

LYNN - When a group of Gordon College students wanted to study the history of Lynn’s minority population, they had the privilege of learning from someone who not only knew it, but lived it.

Sometimes as many as 20 of those students would gather in Virginia Barton’s living room, sitting on the floor and literally learning at her feet. They listened to her stories and asked her questions. And they invariably left with significantly more knowledge than when they arrived.

Gordon acknowledged her invaluable contributions to the college in 2006 when it dedicated Barton Hall, a new residence hall in downtown Lynn for students participating in the Gordon in Lynn program. It was the latest in a series of honors bestowed on Mrs. Barton, recognizing a lifetime of dignified advocacy.

“Everything she did, she did in a gentle way,” said her son, Gordon “Buzzy” Barton. “She was always able to get her points across without being demeaning or belligerent.”

Mrs. Barton died at home Sunday after a lengthy illness. She was 82. A lifelong resident of Lynn, Virginia (Smith) Barton was born May 9, 1928. She attended Connery Elementary, Cobbet Junior High and Classical High, graduating in 1946. She took courses at Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, Salem State and UMass Boston.

Mrs. Barton worked from 1965-73 as a neighborhood and education coordinator for Lynn Economic Opportunity. She then spent more than 20 years as a Title I parent coordinator with Lynn Public Schools, retiring in 1995.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Barton worked tirelessly to combat racial and social injustice. She was a co-founder, president, treasurer and co-executive director of the Community Minority Cultural Center. She also served as president of the North Shore branch of the NAACP, co-chair of Citizens Against Racism and a board member of the Greater Lynn Racial Harmony Committee.

Mrs. Barton had experienced racism first-hand. In 1963 when a fire devastated her home, forcing the family to split up, she had difficulty finding new housing. In another instance, she had an art scholarship rescinded when those awarding it learned she was African-American.

Yet through the obstacles faced by her and those for whom she advocated, Mrs. Barton persevered, always with a smile.

She was once described in a Daily Item story as “A woman who has done more in the battle against racism and injustice than anyone in the city and has ‘fought’ with the most unlikely weapons — a gentle smile and soft voice.”

“She felt it was OK to disagree, but you don’t have to be disagreeable,” said her daughter, Patricia Barton. “She was very inclusive. She cared deeply about socioeconomic issues that affect all people.”

Mrs. Barton earned a host of accolades, including: the Jim Mountain Award from the Mass. Department of Education; the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Florence Luscomb Women’s Center at Salem State; the Clara Barton Humanitarian Award from the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay; the Distinguished Service Award from the Yankee Clipper Council of the Boy Scouts of America; and the Sallie Hacker Award from the Lynn Museum & Historical Society.

In addition to her son, Buzzy, and daughter, Patricia, Mrs. Barton is survived by her daughters, Barbara Barton, Roberta “Birdie” Davis, Donna Barton, Paulette Hartwell and Carol Brown, all of Lynn; six grandchildren, Pamela Wilkins, Michael Wilkins, Brooke Davis, Antoinette (Mia) Hartwell, James Smith and Oren Wright; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Taylor of Lynn and Barbara Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

She was the wife of the late Gordon “Bumps” Barton, the mother of the late Lori Wilkins Holliday and the sister of the late Marion Bradley and Warren Smith.

Service Information: A funeral service for Mrs. Barton will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 74 South Common St., Lynn. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 3-7 p.m. at Solimine, Landergan & Richardson Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rt. 129), Lynn.

Elsie was a co-owner and chef of the Bide-A-Wee Restaurant in Marblehead and worked in the accounting department at the New England Telephone Company in Salem and Lynn, retiring in 1987.

Elsie had many interests and particularly loved reading, gardening, cooking, and was famous for her blueberry pie. A tremendous lover of the arts, her creative talents led her to explore many artistic mediums and encouraged the arts in her children and grandchildren. In addition, Elsie enjoyed going to her summer home in Maine and traveling with her husband. She was a warm, loving wife, encouraging mother, wonderful grandmother, and a lifelong friend to so many. She will be truly missed by all who loved her.

Michael J. Kennedy, 58, loving husband of Candis Kennedy, passed away at home on Saturday May 8, 2010 after a brief battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family.

Born on August 7, 1951, he was the beloved son of the late Leo J. Kennedy Jr. and Pauline Kennedy of Lynn. Mike grew up in Lynn and spent his entire life there. He graduated from Lynn English and went on to study business at Bentley College. A true entrepreneur at heart, Mike opened a successful real estate company, Kennedy Realty, in 1978. He later focused his career on appraisals and had operated Kennedy Appraisal since 1992. He was an extremely hard worker and will be remembered as his family's provider and "go-to-guy."

An avid golfer, Mike was a longtime member of Gannon Golf Course. He also enjoyed fishing with his two sons on many trips to Maine. He loved spending time with his family and planning vacations for them. They have many fond memories from their family home on Lake Ossippee. In the nineties, Mike was actively involved in Lynn youth sports and enjoyed coaching Little League. He will be fondly remembered as an ever positive, life loving, caring man.

He is survived by: his wife, Candis (Cahill) Kennedy of Lynn, with whom he shared nearly 35 years of marriage; two sons, Michael R. Kennedy and Brendan J. Kennedy of Saugus; one daughter, Jamie Kennedy of Wilmington, NC; his mother Pauline Kennedy of Lynn; a brother James Kennedy of Kirkland, WA; a nephew David Kennedy of Bellevue, WA; and many dear relatives and friends.

Mary H. (O'Donnell) Fox, age 71, of Danvers formerly of Nahant, died Friday, April 9, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at Radius Health Care in Danvers, after living with Alzheimer's Disease for the past ten years. She is lovingly remembered as "Nana Mary".
Born in Woburn on May 29, 1938 and raised in Woburn, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Mary (Slaney) O'Donnell. She was a longtime resident of Nahant before moving to Danvers in recent years. A graduate of Woburn High School, class of 1956 Mary retired from Nynex Yellow Pages Company in Middleton in 1995, following a career as an Executive Assistant for over twenty years.
Mary was a beautiful poetry writer, some of her work over the years was published in various articles and newspapers. An avid cross word puzzler, Mary loved to golf, dance and be with her family and friends. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a loving, sparkling personality and smile. She was a beautiful, warm and gentle person who will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and friend.
Mary was a member of the Woburn Drum and Bugle Corps, a Square Dancing group and the Nahant Red Hat Society.
Mary leaves behind her best friend and cherished companion of ten years, Leonard Ryan of Peabody; her children Cheryl Treacy and her husband Jimmy of North Andover, Lisa Romano and her husband Terry of Danvers, and her son Daniel Carey and his wife Yukie Carey of the Phillipines; four loving grandchildren Dylan and Connor Treacy of North Andover, and Lauren and Jenna Romano of Danvers; two step daughters, Nancy Fox of Arlington, VA and Jennifer Fox of Hindsdale, Ill.; brothers Sonny O'Donnell of Pepperell and Phillip O'Donnell and his wife Luci of Missouri; her dog, friend and companion, Rocky; several nieces and nephews. A retired Insurance Company secretary, she passed away suddenly at the Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett on March 24^th after being stricken in her home, she was 75 years of age. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter the late Walter and Helen (Halko) Jasniewski.  When she was a small child her family returned to Chelsea and Helen made her home in Chelsea for the rest of her life, she attended St. Stanislaus Elementary School and was a graduate of Chelsea High School. She worked as a secretary for many years for the Employees Group Insurance Company which was located in Boston.

Her Funeral will begin from the Anthony Memorial Funeral Home 157 Washington Ave. Chelsea on Monday, March 29th, at 8:00 A.M.  Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Stanislaus Church 163 Chestnut St. Chelsea at 9:00 A.M.  Relatives and friends are most kindly invited to attend.  Visiting hours will be held at the Anthony Memorial on Sunday from 3 - 7 P.M.
